The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a multi-family building on Spence Street, Monday at 12:51 p.m.

When they arrived, crews saw heavy smoke coming from the building. Firefighters located and evacuated one person from the building. Paramedics assessed and treated that individual and transported them to hospital in critical condition.

Crews located one dog deceased in the building. The City of Winnipeg’s Animal Services Agency responded to provide care for the dog.

All other residents safely self-evacuated from the building before crews arrived.

Residents from non-affected suites were able to return to their homes once crews left the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
