Two women have been charged with kidnapping in connection with the alleged abduction of a five-year-old boy earlier this week on Montreal's South Shore.
Ruixue Yang, 65, and Xin Wang, 48, were arrested in York Region, near Toronto, and appeared via video conference in a Longueuil, Quebec courtroom on Wednesday.
Prosecutors claim that Yang and Wang abducted the boy in Brossard, Quebec, with the intent to confine or imprison him against his will and planned to transport him out of Canada.
The women are scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday, this time in person, for a bail hearing.
A publication ban has been imposed to protect the identity of the child.
Police have not yet disclosed the nature of the relationship between the women and the family from whom the boy was taken on Monday evening.
The abduction led to an Amber Alert early Tuesday morning, which was later canceled after the boy was found safe later that day.
