30-year-old lady who has gone missing in Ottawa River is still being sought by police
The river conditions have been calm during the investigation, but heavy fog on Wednesday morning prevented the OPP’s aviation team from being deployed.
Police are still searching for a woman in the Ottawa River near Pembroke after she went missing over a day ago.
“This is still an ongoing search, and we cannot make any assumptions,” said Bill Dickson, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) media relations officer, to CityNews.
On Tuesday evening, two people set out in a tandem kayak near the Highway 148 bridge and Allumette Island, close to Pembroke.
The vessel capsized around 5 a.m. on Wednesday after encountering rapids near the inter-provincial bridge. Neither person was wearing a personal flotation device.
A nearby resident heard calls for help and alerted emergency crews.
A 34-year-old man was rescued, but a 30-year-old woman is still missing.
The river conditions have been calm during the investigation, but heavy fog on Wednesday morning prevented the OPP’s aviation team from being deployed.
“The divers from our Underwater Search and Recovery Unit will be back in the water again today,” Dickson said.
The search efforts are ongoing with support from OPP’s Emergency Response Team, Aviation Services Unit, Marine Units, Canine Unit, and Underwater Search and Recovery Unit.
The Sûreté du Québec is also assisting with its marine unit, aviation unit, and ground searchers.
