9 injured after stolen BMW collides with TTC bus in North York
BMW was travelling at very high rate of speed, police say
Nine individuals have been hospitalized, including two with life-threatening injuries, following a crash between a stolen BMW and a TTC bus in North York early Monday morning, according to Toronto police.
The incident occurred around 1:50 a.m. near the intersection of Bathurst Street and Wilson Avenue.
Police reported that a white BMW and a black SUV were both speeding westbound on Wilson Avenue. As they neared the intersection at Bathurst Street, the black SUV passed through, while the BMW collided with the driver’s side of a TTC bus traveling south. The impact was so severe that the bus spun around to face north, police said.
Four people were in the BMW, two of whom sustained life-threatening injuries. Six individuals were aboard the bus, all of whom were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. A female passenger was ejected from the bus during the crash.
When officers arrived at the scene, the BMW was on fire. They extinguished the flames and rescued two of the occupants, while Toronto Fire crews freed the other two. “It’s a horrific scene, quite frankly,” said Duty Senior Officer Brian Maslowski.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the BMW and the black SUV speeding in the area at the time of the collision to come forward. The make and model of the black SUV remain unknown.
As police continue their investigation, Bathurst Street and Wilson Avenue are expected to be closed for several hours. Bus routes in the area have been diverted, with TTC officials confirming they are cooperating with the police on the investigation. "The safety of our customers and employees is always our paramount concern," they stated.
