A 60s man was gravely hurt in an early morning collision on the Deerfoot Trail
While alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash, police are investigating whether speed played a role.
Calgary commuters faced delays Thursday morning following a single-vehicle crash on Deerfoot Trail at Peigan Trail SE. The incident resulted in the closure of southbound Deerfoot from 17 Avenue for several hours.
According to Calgary police, the crash occurred just after 3:30 a.m. when a white 2015 GMC Savana van, driven by a man in his 60s, struck the concrete median south of the Peigan Trail off-ramp.
The van then crossed three southbound lanes before veering off the road, hitting the bridge deck of the Peigan Trail overpass, and rolling onto its roof in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail.
The driver was rushed to the hospital in life-threatening condition. While alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash, police are investigating whether speed played a role.
The road reopened around 8 a.m. Police are asking witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact them at 403-266-1234 or submit tips anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
