After passengers stranded for 10 hours in Quebec, federal transport minister to meet with Via Rail
Via Rail confirmed that passengers were stuck for 10 hours on Saturday when a train broke down between Montreal and Quebec City after experiencing two consecutive mechanical issues.
Canada’s transport minister, Pablo Rodriguez, has pledged to investigate a recent incident in which Via Rail passengers were stranded for nearly 10 hours in Quebec over the long weekend.
Rodriguez announced on Sunday via X (formerly Twitter) that he will be meeting with Via Rail leadership this week, emphasizing that "passengers deserve better."
The delay occurred on Saturday when a train traveling between Montreal and Quebec City broke down due to two consecutive mechanical failures. Via Rail reported that no buses were available in the region to provide alternative transportation.
During the delay, electricity, air conditioning, and washrooms were intermittently shut down to facilitate repairs and to couple the train with another. However, Via Rail assured that passengers were provided with beverages, snacks throughout the day, and a meal with additional water in the evening.
The fire department was eventually called in to assist with transferring passengers to another train, resulting in passengers arriving at their destination 10 hours late.
Additionally, Via Rail is investigating an incident where an employee confiscated a passenger’s phone during the delay. The company stated that appropriate measures will be taken following a review.
"We are committed to providing exceptional customer service and ensuring that all passengers are treated with respect and dignity," Via Rail said in a statement on Sunday.
The company also issued a formal apology for the inconvenience and announced that it will offer a full refund to all affected passengers.
