Announcement looming on future of primary healthcare in Alberta
In November, the Alberta government announced plans to decentralize Alberta Health Services (AHS) after nearly 14 years of centralized operations.
Health Minister Adriana LaGrange is scheduled to speak in Calgary at 10 a.m., where she will outline the next steps to "refocus and strengthen" primary care.
While specifics remain limited, LaGrange will be joined by the incoming CEO of Primary Care Alberta, whose identity has yet to be revealed.
In November, the Alberta government announced plans to decentralize Alberta Health Services (AHS) after nearly 14 years of centralized operations.
At the time, Premier Danielle Smith stated that her government would establish a single provincial healthcare system with "specialized areas of focus" by restructuring AHS into four separate entities: primary care, acute care, continuing care, and mental health and addictions.
Mental health and addictions were the first areas to undergo changes. Since September, Recovery Alberta has been responsible for those services.
This is an ongoing story.
