Baby girl dies in Toronto house fire, young woman in critical condition
Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop said firefighters were called to a home on Trethewey Drive, near Eglinton Avenue and Keele Street, at around 1 a.m. where the bulk of the fire was at the back of the house.
A five-month-old baby girl has died, and a 19-year-old woman remains in critical condition following a house fire early Friday, according to Toronto Fire Services.
Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop said firefighters responded around 1 a.m. to a home on Trethewey Drive, near Eglinton Avenue and Keele Street, where the fire was concentrated at the rear of the house.
During the initial search, firefighters rescued both the infant and the young woman. Paramedics transported them to the hospital, but the baby did not survive, Jessop confirmed. The 19-year-old woman remains in critical condition.
“I want to extend our deepest condolences to all of those impacted by this extremely tragic fire, especially involving a young child,” Jessop told reporters at the scene.
The house had six occupants in total, with four managing to escape unharmed. Two of those who got out safely confirmed to Global News that they were relatives of the baby and the young woman.
The fire has since been brought under control, with crews on fire watch to monitor for hotspots. An investigation is underway to determine the fire’s origin, cause, and circumstances.
