Biden says 'the world is better off' because of Trudeau
Biden's glowing praise for Trudeau comes in stark contrast to Trump's suggestion Canada merge with U.S.
U.S. President Joe Biden has praised Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s tenure, highlighting his efforts to strengthen international relations, continental cooperation, and bilateral ties since 2015. Biden described Trudeau as a friend and noted that Canada remains the United States' closest ally and partner, emphasizing that the same could be said of Trudeau himself.
Biden recalled that Trudeau was the first foreign leader he spoke with upon becoming president and shared that he spoke with Trudeau on Monday, following Trudeau’s resignation announcement, to express gratitude for their collaborative achievements.
"We've tackled some of the toughest issues our nations faced in decades, from the COVID-19 pandemic to climate change to the scourge of fentanyl," Biden stated. "We've stood together with the people of Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression to defend our nations' most sacred value: freedom."
Biden also highlighted the progress made under Trudeau's leadership, including investments to strengthen supply chains and rebuild both nations' economies. "He led with commitment, optimism, and strategic vision," Biden added, noting that the relationship between the two nations is stronger as a result of Trudeau’s efforts. "The American and Canadian people are safer because of him. And the world is better off because of him."
In stark contrast, U.S. president-elect Donald Trump reacted to Trudeau's resignation by reigniting his controversial proposal for Canada to merge with the United States. In a statement on his social media platform, Trump claimed, "Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned."
Trump went on to argue that merging the two nations would eliminate tariffs, reduce taxes, and enhance security against perceived threats. "Together, what a great nation it would be!!!" he concluded.
The differing responses reflect the contrasting leadership styles and priorities of the outgoing and incoming U.S. presidents as Canada prepares for a new chapter following Trudeau’s resignation.
