Bloc Québécois will start discussions to overthrow Liberals after deadline
The other bill, which proposes increasing old age security payments for seniors under 75, lacks Liberal backing.
The Bloc Québécois is set to initiate discussions with other parties to potentially bring down the minority Liberal government, which has missed its deadline to pass two crucial bills.
Bloc Leader Yves-François Blanchet established the deadline last month, warning the Liberals that they must pass two private member’s bills to avoid an election “before Christmas.”
One Bloc bill, intended to protect supply management in trade negotiations, has government support and is currently under Senate review.
The other bill, which proposes increasing old age security payments for seniors under 75, lacks Liberal backing.
The Bloc’s demands follow NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s recent announcement that his party had ended the supply-and-confidence agreement that had supported the government for over two years.
Thus far in this fall’s parliamentary session, the Liberals have withstood two Conservative-led non-confidence votes, with both the Bloc and the NDP voting against ousting the government.
