Bloc to push Liberals on pension payments with opposition day motion
Acquiescing to the Bloc’s demands, however, will only buy the government a few months of support.
The Bloc Québécois is set to pressure the Liberals on Tuesday by pushing for a House of Commons debate on increasing old age pension payments for all seniors.
Bloc Leader Yves-François Blanchet has given the government until October 29 to approve his party's pension proposal, which is estimated to cost $16 billion. If the government does not agree, Blanchet has said he will begin discussions with other opposition parties to potentially bring down the government.
Even if the government agrees to the Bloc’s demands, it will only secure a few months of continued support from the party. The Bloc plans to use its opposition day motion to urge the government to back the pension bill as soon as possible and is calling on other parties to support the motion.
A vote is expected later this week, which could provide insight into whether the government is willing to meet the Bloc's conditions.
Meanwhile, the Conservatives are also attempting to oust the government, with MPs scheduled to vote on a non-confidence motion later this afternoon, though it is not expected to pass.
