Bomb threat causes Air India emergency landing in Iqaluit
Air India says it's one of several threats to the airline in recent days
An Air India flight made an emergency landing in Iqaluit on Tuesday morning following an online bomb threat.
Flight AI127, traveling from New Delhi to Chicago, diverted to Iqaluit Airport as a precaution, according to a statement from Air India.
The airline noted it has recently faced multiple threats, along with other Indian carriers.
"Though all have subsequently been found to be hoaxes, as a responsible airline operator, all threats are taken seriously," Air India stated.
The airline also indicated it is exploring legal action against the "perpetrators of such threats" to ensure accountability for the disruption and inconvenience caused to passengers, as well as to recover damages.
Nunavut RCMP confirmed that all 211 passengers and crew members disembarked safely at around 5:20 a.m. and were moved to Iqaluit International Airport.
Since the incident occurred in Nunavut, Cpl. George Henrie said local authorities will handle the investigation into the bomb threat.
This emergency landing follows a tense political backdrop. On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of supporting violent activities against Canadians within Canada and expelled six Indian diplomats.
Earlier that day, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme held a press conference, revealing that Mounties had uncovered "a significant amount of information about the breadth and depth of criminal activity orchestrated by agents of the government of India and consequential threats to the safety and security of Canadians and individuals living in Canada."
