Canada begins process to impose tariffs on Chinese batteries, critical minerals

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has announced that the consultation period for imposing tariffs on additional clean energy goods from China will commence today. This follows an August decision to raise tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles from 6% to 106%, starting October 1.

Beginning October 15, a 25% tariff will also be applied to certain steel and aluminum products from China.

Freeland stated that a 30-day review under the Customs Tariff Act will now start to assess the necessity of tariffs on batteries, battery components, semiconductors, critical minerals and metals, and solar products.

Should these tariffs be implemented, Canada would align with the United States, which announced similar tariff increases for these items in the spring.

Recently, China has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization regarding Canada's EV tariffs and has initiated its own anti-dumping investigation into Canadian canola imports.
