Canada steadfast on climate plan despite Trump re-election: Guilbeault

Canadian Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault has asserted that a potential re-election of Donald Trump as U.S. President will not alter Canada’s commitment to its climate change agenda.
Guilbeault made this statement while attending the United Nations climate change conference in Azerbaijan, where discussions are focused on the Paris Agreement.
During his first term, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Agreement and has pledged to do so again if re-elected.
Despite this, Guilbeault remains confident that Canada can continue advancing its own climate policies independently, just as it did during Trump’s previous administration.
In a call with reporters, Guilbeault emphasized, “We’ve navigated a Trump administration before, and our government did not let disagreements affect our climate policies.”
The minister also responded to recent comments from former Liberal Finance Minister Bill Morneau, who expressed skepticism about Canada imposing caps on greenhouse gas emissions in the current economic climate.
Morneau suggested that now might not be the right time to introduce such regulations.
However, Guilbeault disagreed, reaffirming his stance on moving forward with draft regulations for capping emissions in the oil and gas sector.
He argued that these caps can be implemented without reducing production levels, despite industry claims to the contrary.
