Christopher Nolan, following the success of his Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, is set to direct a grand new project: an adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. The film is scheduled for release on July 17, 2026, as announced by Universal Pictures.

While details about the film remain limited, the studio has revealed that it will be a "mythic action epic" filmed across various global locations using advanced IMAX technology. Notably, this will be the first adaptation of The Odyssey to be shown on IMAX film screens.

Nolan has been a longtime advocate of IMAX, beginning with The Dark Knight, and has utilized large-format film and high-resolution cameras for his past three films. For Oppenheimer, a new black-and-white IMAX film stock was even developed.

Although Nolan has not disclosed the specifics of the new technology to be used for The Odyssey, he mentioned earlier this month that he and the IMAX team are in an intensive testing phase to prepare for the production. He praised IMAX’s engineering staff, saying, "They have an incredible engineering staff, really brilliant minds doing extraordinary work. It's wonderful to see innovation in the celluloid film arena still happening and happening at the highest level possible."

The Odyssey will mark Nolan’s second collaboration with Universal Pictures, following Oppenheimer, which grossed nearly $1 billion at the box office and earned him his first Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture.

There has been much speculation regarding the plot and cast for The Odyssey, though none of the casting reports have been officially confirmed by the studio.
