She further clarified, "To be effective, a minister must speak on behalf of the prime minister and with his full confidence. In making your decision, you have made it clear that I no longer credibly possess that confidence and that I do not possess the authority that goes with it."
Freeland also expressed that she was in "disagreement" with the Prime Minister regarding the "best path forward for Canada."
The announcement sent ripples through Ottawa, especially as it coincided with the presentation of the fall economic statement, leaving the event's proceedings in limbo. Reports had emerged in recent weeks suggesting that Trudeau was considering bringing former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney into his cabinet.
Despite stepping down from her cabinet role, Freeland affirmed her intention to run for re-election as a Liberal Member of Parliament in her Toronto riding.
This development came alongside the resignation of Housing Minister Sean Fraser, who stepped down for family reasons, revealing he learned of Freeland's resignation from reporters.
Freeland has served as Finance Minister since August 2020.
