Canadian TikTok creators are worried that the federal government's recent decision to shut down the app’s Canadian operations will disrupt their support network and impact their earning opportunities.
Mikael Melo, a TikTok culture commentator based in Toronto, shared that the app’s Canadian division has been instrumental in assisting local creators with account optimization, resolving technical glitches, and securing sponsorships.
He expressed concern that these critical resources will disappear once the closure takes effect.
The government announced on Wednesday that TikTok’s Canadian business must be dissolved due to national security concerns, though it stopped short of banning the app entirely.
Toronto-based lifestyle and food creator Mali Raja noted that TikTok’s Canadian team had been actively hosting pop-up events and digital campaigns to showcase local talent, while also helping connect creators with brand partnerships.
She now feels less motivated to continue creating content on the platform, given the uncertain future of TikTok in Canada.
Michelle Nguyen, president and chief strategist at the Toronto-based social media agency Super Duper, added that advertisers may grow hesitant to invest in content on the platform due to this decision.
As a result, she believes Canadian creators could see a drop in ad revenue moving forward.
