Five hockey players' sex assault case in court
This case has drawn significant attention, given the players' prominence in Canadian hockey and the broader discussions about accountability and conduct in sports.
A London, Ontario, judge will hear legal arguments today in the sexual assault case involving five members of Canada’s 2018 World Junior Hockey Team.
The accused—Dillon Dube, Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Cal Foote, and Alex Formenton—were charged earlier this year in connection with an alleged incident that occurred in June 2018. McLeod faces an additional charge of sexual assault for “being a party to the offence.”
Lawyers for the players have stated that their clients intend to defend themselves against the allegations, with all five expected to plead not guilty.
Legal Proceedings
A jury trial is set to commence on April 22, 2024, with several weeks of hearings scheduled beforehand to address legal matters. However, a publication ban prevents reporting on the issues discussed during these proceedings to safeguard the accused’s right to a fair trial.
