The Alberta government is allocating nearly $150 million to assist with recovery efforts in Jasper, Alta., after a wildfire in July destroyed a third of the town.
Although residents directly affected by the fire cannot access the funds, the town can use the money for expenses such as staff overtime, emergency food and shelter, and other administrative costs.
Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis stated that the funding will help accelerate the town's recovery process.
Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland expressed the community's gratitude for the province's support, emphasizing that the funding will be crucial for rebuilding efforts.
The funding comes from Alberta's Disaster Recovery Program, which has previously been used to assist Fort McMurray after the 2016 wildfire and to address flooding in central Alberta last year.
The program covers 90% of eligible costs, with the affected municipality responsible for the remaining portion.
