Former fashion tycoon Peter Nygard’s long-delayed sentencing expected Monday
The 83-year-old was convicted on four charges last November but the sentencing process has dragged on for several reasons, including Nygard’s difficulties in retaining legal counsel.
Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard is set to be sentenced today for his sexual assault convictions, following several months of delays.
The 83-year-old was convicted on four charges last November, but the sentencing process has been repeatedly postponed due to various issues, including Nygard's challenges in securing legal representation. Last month, the sentencing was delayed again as one of the Crown attorneys was out of the country.
Nygard’s current lawyer is advocating for a six-year sentence, citing his age and health concerns, while prosecutors are pushing for a 15-year term.
Nygard, who once led a prominent women’s fashion company, was accused of sexually assaulting several women at his Toronto headquarters between the 1980s and mid-2000s. He was convicted on four counts of sexual assault but acquitted of a fifth charge and one count of forcible confinement.
