Gas prices in Canada drop to lowest national average since February
Prices fell 3.4 cents per litre between Sept. 5 and Sept. 12, marking a sixth-consecutive week of declines. The biggest discount was in Sarnia, Ont., at 12 cents per litre. Kingston, Ont. and Brandon, Man. saw prices fall 10 cents. Vancouver was the only market tracked where gas prices increased.
Gas prices in Canada have reached their lowest national average since February, according to data from Kalibrate.
Between September 5 and September 12, prices decreased by 3.4 cents per liter, marking the sixth consecutive week of declines. The most significant drop was observed in Sarnia, Ont., where prices fell by 12 cents per liter. Kingston, Ont., and Brandon, Man., experienced a 10-cent decrease. Vancouver was the only area where gas prices increased.
Despite U.S. crude prices plummeting to their lowest levels since 2021, GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, attributes the decline in gas prices largely to seasonal factors.
“A lot of what we're seeing is seasonal. Gas prices would likely decrease this time of year even if oil prices remained stable or rose,” De Haan told Yahoo Finance on Tuesday. “We’re also transitioning to cheaper winter gasoline.”
De Haan expects the downward trend in prices to continue but notes that hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, escalating violence in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, or tensions in the Middle East could drive prices higher.
