The chair of the committee overseeing the government's response to the inquiry into the 2020 Nova Scotia mass shooting has expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far.

Myra Freeman, who has led the independent committee for the past three months, was appointed to monitor how governments and police forces are acting on the recommendations from the report on the shooting that claimed 22 lives.

The federal-provincial inquiry produced a 3,000-page report with 130 non-binding recommendations covering various issues, including community safety, police reform, public mental health, firearm access, and gender-based violence.

In a briefing today, Freeman reported that significant progress is being made by police and governments in several areas. However, she did not provide specific details or documents, noting that the committee’s first annual report will be published in November.

Freeman highlighted that the recommendations are intricate and require extensive coordination for full implementation.

The final report from the public inquiry, released in March 2023, delivered a critical assessment of the RCMP’s actions during the April 2020 rampage, in which a man disguised as a Mountie and driving a replica RCMP cruiser killed friends, neighbors, and strangers over a 13-hour period in northern and central Nova Scotia.
