Starting today, Ontario residents aged six months and older can access free COVID-19 and flu vaccinations.
The COVID-19 vaccine being offered is the updated Omicron KP.2, designed to target the latest variants. Moderna’s KP.2 vaccine is available for those six months and older, while Pfizer’s KP.2 is available for individuals aged 12 and up.
These vaccines are interchangeable as long as they meet age requirements, but the Novavax vaccine will not be available in Ontario for 2024 and 2025.
Health officials confirm that residents can receive the COVID-19 vaccine alongside or at any interval with the flu shot or other routine vaccinations.
Flu shots are recommended for everyone six months and older, though children aged six months to two years must receive their flu shot from a doctor, nurse practitioner, or public health unit, as pharmacies cannot administer flu shots to children under two.
In Toronto, most pharmacies and primary care providers are offering both COVID-19 and flu vaccines. Toronto Public Health recommends that everyone six months and older receive the updated COVID-19 vaccine this fall or winter for optimal protection against current strains.
For those at higher risk of severe COVID-19, the vaccine is especially encouraged. Previously vaccinated individuals are advised to wait at least six months from their last dose, though a three-month interval is acceptable.
Individuals who cannot receive an mRNA vaccine are advised to discuss alternative options with their healthcare provider.
Health Canada continues to monitor the safety of all approved COVID-19 vaccines in the country and has pledged to take action if needed.
