Jacques-Cartier Bridge closed due to environmental protest
Police say if you can work from home, do it
Two protesters scaled a structure of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge early Tuesday morning, prompting a police operation that has shut down the bridge and caused significant traffic disruptions during rush hour.
The bridge, which links Montreal’s South Shore with downtown, remains fully closed in both directions.
The protest began shortly before 5:30 a.m., and by 6 a.m., traffic on the bridge was heavily congested. However, stranded vehicles have since cleared off the bridge.
Around 7 a.m., the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) provided an update, confirming the protesters were still on the structure and that negotiations were underway to resolve the situation peacefully. Police warned that it may take a few more hours to reopen the bridge.
Authorities are advising commuters to work from home if possible due to the ongoing closure.
One of the protesters told Radio-Canada that the demonstration was organized by two groups: Last Generation Canada and Collectif Antigone. Their demand is to stop investments in fossil fuels.
