The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenceman Jake McCabe to a five-year contract extension, which the team announced on Monday.
The new contract, set to begin next season, has an average annual value (AAV) of $4.51 million, replacing McCabe's current deal of $2 million, which was due to end this summer.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, McCabe agreed to defer money, reducing the AAV from $4.7 million to $4.51 million in the long-term extension.

He experienced his first playoff action as a Maple Leaf. McCabe had a standout 2023-24 season, recording eight goals and 28 points in 73 games and leading Maple Leafs’ defencemen with a plus-20 rating. He also added one goal in seven playoff games.
Before the regular season, McCabe expressed his desire to stay with Toronto, saying, "I love it here." He currently plays in the top four alongside Oliver Ekman-Larsson, tallying three assists in nine games this season and leading the team with a plus-6 rating.
Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews praised McCabe’s leadership and on-ice presence, calling him "an amazing person, an amazing teammate" and highlighting his vocal role on the bench and support for teammates.
Originally drafted 44th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2012 NHL Draft, McCabe has cemented his role in Toronto’s defence lineup.
