Kingston shortlisted as ‘Destination of the Year’ for 2024 Seatrade Cruise Awards

Kingston, Ontario, has been shortlisted for the Destination of the Year award at the 2024 Seatrade Cruise Awards, earning recognition for its warm reception of Great Lakes cruise ships.

The city is praised for its natural beauty, vibrant culinary offerings, and rich historical heritage, providing cruise passengers with a diverse and engaging experience.

Tourism Kingston works closely with Great Lakes cruise lines to ensure that visitors enjoy memorable and authentic experiences. Passengers are introduced to cultural attractions, including tours of Kingston’s historic landmarks such as Fort Henry and the Great Lakes Museum.

“Each year, the global cruising industry honors excellence in several categories, and being nominated alongside world-class cruise destinations is a tremendous honor for our Great Lakes community. Kingston has made a significant effort to establish a strong presence in the Great Lakes cruising world, and visitors are captivated by the unique welcome they receive in the city,” said Stephen Burnett, Executive Director of the Great Lakes Cruise Association.

Kingston is one of three cities vying for this prestigious award, along with Abu Dhabi and Fowey Harbour in the U.K. Ships making their first visit to Kingston are greeted by the Town Crier, a bagpiper, and representatives from the City of Kingston and Tourism Kingston. Departing ships are treated to a farewell performance by the Ollin drum circle.

“What really sets us apart from other ports is our beautiful arrival and departure ceremonies, as well as the attractions we offer in the city. Fort Henry, the Keewatin at the Great Lakes Museum—these are perfect for cruise ship guests to enjoy,” said Noelle Piche of Tourism Kingston.

The Seatrade Cruise Awards will be presented on September 11 in Malaga, Spain, during Seatrade Cruise Med, the largest gathering of the global cruise industry.
