Local writers concentrating on an impending Halifax literary event
“That’s really why we do it,” Bulger says. “It’s great to be able to get rid of the extra stock as well, but showcasing new writers to such a big community is way more important.”
A cherished celebration of Atlantic Canadian literature, Word on the Hill, is returning to North End Halifax this weekend.
Hosted by Nimbus Publishing on Strawberry Hill Street, the event has become a favorite block party since it succeeded the Word on the Street festival, which ended during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event features a significant book sale with overstocked titles, book signings, refreshments, and a kids’ corner with renowned children’s authors such as Brianna Corr Scott, author of Mermaid Lullaby, and Lana Shupe, author of The Lonely Little Lighthouse.
However, Nimbus Publishing’s general manager, Terrilee Bulger, emphasizes that the core focus of Word on the Hill is the author readings.
“That’s really why we do it,” Bulger says. “It’s great to be able to get rid of the extra stock as well, but showcasing new writers to such a big community is way more important.”
This year’s lineup includes screenwriter and novelist Susan Rodgers, authors Michelle Hébert and Jessica Ilse, and Halifax’s first Métis poet laureate, Lorri Neilsen Glenn, who will discuss her latest book, The Old Moon in Her Arms: Women I Have Known and Been. Bulger notes, “She really is passionate especially about women writing memoirs,” adding that Glenn will offer advice on writing personal stories and biographies.
Word on the Hill is set for this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3660 Strawberry Hill Street.
