Lush Cosmetics lays off staff, scales down Vancouver operation
U.K.-based brand to close B.C. woodshop, shift manufacturing operations to Toronto
Cosmetics brand Lush has announced that it will be laying off staff as part of a reduction in operations at its facilities in Vancouver.
Amanda Caruso, a spokesperson for the U.K.-based company, declined to disclose the number of employees affected by the cuts to Lush’s Canadian operations, citing privacy concerns.
However, she confirmed that the plan includes closing a woodshop in British Columbia and relocating manufacturing operations from Vancouver to Toronto.
Caruso explained that these changes are aimed at improving operational efficiency and ensuring the brand's long-term success. She noted that there will be no immediate effects on Lush shops, the online store, or app services, and some employees may be relocated or transitioned to new roles.
The adjustments are expected to be finalized by February 26, 2025, she added.
CBC News has reached out to the Workers United Canada Council, which includes the Global Lush Union as an affiliate, for comments on the situation.
In the meantime, Adrienne Wensel, an associate lawyer at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP, informed CBC News that several non-unionized Lush employees have contacted her firm since the middle of last week to have their termination packages reviewed. She did not provide specific numbers regarding those who reached out or whether any qualify for a claim.
Wensel stated that companies are permitted to terminate employees without cause during shutdowns or restructurings, though affected individuals may be entitled to severance pay of up to 24 months, depending on various factors such as seniority and job position.
"The key question is whether the employees are given enough severance," Wensel emphasized.
"I strongly encourage people to seek information to better understand their legal rights, as there can be significant financial implications."
