McGill decides to stop the strike and withdraw its legal case against the law faculty union

McGill University has decided to withdraw its legal challenge against the law faculty's right to unionize, effectively concluding a strike that saw law professors on strike for more than five weeks this fall.
In a joint statement, McGill University and the Association of McGill Professors of Law announced a “new path forward” to address working conditions for professors throughout the institution.
As part of the agreement, the union will negotiate collective agreements alongside two emerging unions from the faculties of arts and education, a key demand from the university.
In return, McGill will cease its judicial review of the law faculty’s union certification and will no longer contest the certification of the two other unions.
Although law professors suspended their strike and resumed teaching last week, they had warned they would strike again if no deal was reached.
The law faculty union was officially certified by Quebec’s labour tribunal in November 2022 but has yet to finalize its first collective agreement.
