McGill ordered to stop obstructing union of law professors

Quebec’s labour tribunal has ordered McGill University to cease obstructing and interfering with the union representing full-time law professors.

According to an August 30 decision, the tribunal determined that the university likely violated the Quebec Labour Code when its administration sent two emails to law professors that were critical of the union.

These emails were sent in the days leading up to a vote by the law faculty on whether to initiate an unlimited strike, which coincided with the start of classes.

The tribunal concluded that the emails aimed to undermine the union’s credibility during a particularly sensitive time and has now ordered McGill to notify the union before any future communications with law professors.

The union, certified by the labour tribunal in November 2022, is facing a challenge to its certification by the university, with a hearing scheduled in Quebec Superior Court for December.

Last Monday, the union began an unlimited strike, with its demands focusing on faculty governance, salaries, and the right to unionize.
