Mexican president sarcastically trolls Trump over renaming Gulf of Mexico

Donald Trump's recent proposals, including renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" and suggestions of U.S. control over various territories, have drawn reactions worldwide. However, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the matter with a blend of humor and sarcasm during a press briefing on Wednesday.

A Sarcastic Response

Standing before a world map and accompanied by former culture minister Jose Alfonso Suarez del Real, Sheinbaum mocked Trump's idea by proposing that North America be renamed "América Mexicana" (Mexican America), referencing a historical document from 1814 that used the term. "That sounds nice, no?" she remarked with a smirk. She also pointed out that the Gulf of Mexico has been called that since 1607.

Suarez del Real elaborated, stating, "The fact is that Mexican America is recognized since the 17th century as the name for the whole northern part of the (American) continent," while indicating the area on the map.

Broader Implications for Diplomacy

The exchange reflects growing curiosity about how Sheinbaum will handle Trump's assertive diplomatic style, which includes promises of mass deportations and imposing heavy tariffs on Mexico.

Brian Winter, vice president of the Council of the Americas, remarked that humor might be a strategic choice in dealing with Trump. "It projects strength, which is what Trump responds to," Winter said, adding that Sheinbaum knows this approach won’t suffice for broader issues like immigration, trade, and drug enforcement.

Firm Stance on Trade

Sheinbaum has taken a strong position against Trump's tariff proposal, which includes a 25% tax on Mexican imports. She warned that Mexico would respond with equivalent measures, emphasizing that such tariffs would lead to inflation and job losses for both nations. "This is not acceptable," she asserted.

Pragmatic Approach to Immigration

While initially suggesting her administration would urge the U.S. to deport migrants directly to their home countries, Sheinbaum later softened her stance. In January, she indicated that Mexico would consider accepting deportees but might limit this to certain nationalities or negotiate compensation.

Expansive U.S. Proposals

Trump’s comments about renaming the Gulf of Mexico came during a press conference where he outlined an expansive agenda. This included discussions about the U.S. potentially taking control of the Panama Canal and Greenland, as well as using economic measures to influence Canada. He also reiterated his dissatisfaction with the trade deficit, stating that the U.S. doesn't need Canadian lumber, dairy, or automobiles.

Canada's Response

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau firmly rejected Trump’s ideas, particularly the notion of Canada becoming part of the U.S. "There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States," Trudeau stated. He highlighted the mutual benefits of the trade and security partnership between the two countries in a social media post.

Sheinbaum’s use of wit to address Trump’s proposals has added a unique dynamic to Mexico’s response, though she remains prepared to engage on serious issues affecting the bilateral relationship.
