Minister of education in Quebec provides access to paid teaching internships
A report from "La Presse" revealed that teaching program enrollment at Quebec universities is declining.
Facing significant challenges in recruiting teachers for Quebec schools, Education Minister Bernard Drainville is considering paid internships as a way to boost the profession's appeal.
"Madame Déry (the Minister of Higher Education) and I are working to get there," he said, though he couldn’t provide a specific timeline for implementation.
A report from "La Presse" revealed that teaching program enrollment at Quebec universities is declining.
Minister Pascale Déry acknowledged the situation, stating she was focusing on the "fourth teaching internship" and recognizing the ongoing challenges despite current efforts. "We know that, we’re looking at the numbers, but we’re working on it," she said.
Minister Drainville, while cautious on the topic of internships, emphasized his government’s actions to uplift the teaching profession and stressed the need to shift the negative narrative surrounding education.
He called for a collective effort from unions, universities, society, and the media to highlight the positive impact of teachers and school staff on children's lives. "As a society, we have to mobilize to value education," he added.
