Mom, twin children escape SE Calgary house fire, two animals perish
Once inside, firefighters discovered flames in the basement, which they quickly extinguished.
A Calgary mother took swift action Monday night when smoke started to fill her home in southeast Calgary.
Calgary Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Cowan reported that the fire began just before 10:30 p.m. in the 0-100 block of Deer Ridge Mews SE.
When firefighters arrived, they were met with heavy smoke coming from a two-storey house.
“The mother and her two-year-old twins had already escaped,” Cowan said. “She mentioned that she noticed the house filling with smoke, so she rushed upstairs to get her children and safely ran outside, which is exactly what we advise people to do.”
Once inside, firefighters discovered flames in the basement, which they quickly extinguished.
Crews also searched for two cats still inside the home. "They found both cats and attempted CPR on one, but sadly, both perished in the fire," Cowan added.
There were no other injuries reported. The house sustained considerable smoke damage, and the family will be displaced for some time.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
