Montreal dockworkers to stop all overtime work as contract talks drag on
The union representing nearly 1,200 longshore workers at the port says it has filed notice that the overtime strike will kick off at 7 a.m. ET on Thursday and continue indefinitely.
Dockworkers at the Port of Montreal are set to begin an overtime work stoppage later this week as a pressure tactic during ongoing contract negotiations with management.
The union representing nearly 1,200 longshore workers at the port has issued notice that the overtime strike will commence at 7 a.m. ET on Thursday and will continue indefinitely.
Michel Murray, a spokesperson for the union local, stated that the Maritime Employers Association is “dragging its feet” in negotiations, and the job action is intended to increase pressure to secure a deal.
He highlighted that scheduling has become a significant hurdle in the bargaining sessions, which resumed on Friday under the oversight of federal mediators.
The discussions were reignited following a three-day strike last week at two terminals that manage 41 percent of the container traffic at the Port of Montreal.
The dockworkers have been without a contract since December 31.
