Montreal doctor calls for change after son hit by car near west-end school
“It’s very complicated as an area and it starts back a couple of blocks away with the train tracks,” she said.
A Montreal mother and physician is voicing concerns over a potentially dangerous intersection in the city's west end after her teenage son was struck by a car earlier this month.
Dr. Samara Zavalkoff, an ICU physician at Montreal Children's Hospital, described the incident as both preventable and fortunate that it wasn’t worse.
“It’s a complex area that starts a few blocks back with the train tracks,” Zavalkoff explained.
Her son, Charlie Shein, was crossing at the intersection of Westminster Avenue South and Ainslie Road in Montreal West when he was hit. Despite a stop sign at the crosswalk, he believes the driver may not have seen him due to sun glare.
“I went flying back and landed on my lower back,” Shein recalled.
Residents have raised concerns about this stretch of Westminster for years, noting heavy traffic flow that includes vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians, alongside a busy commuter-rail crossing. One local official has acknowledged the safety issue, stating that potential measures are under consideration.
