A group of University of Alberta students commemorate fallen Edmonton soldiers from the First and Second World Wars by putting up posters along 100 Ave. Our Leo Cruzat has the story.

A group of University of Alberta students has taken to the streets of Edmonton to honor fallen soldiers from the First and Second World Wars through a heartfelt initiative called “Have you seen my son?”

The project involves displaying over 100 posters along 100 Ave, each representing a soldier who lost their life in combat.

Organizer Joe Macdonald explained the significance of the location, stating, “The whole idea is you walk in honour of them, and this is the same street where many of those veterans would march when they returned home after the war.”

The posters have been installed from 102nd Street to 114th Street, beginning near the Victoria Armouries.

Macdonald’s commitment to the project is echoed by his volunteer friends, including Eric Milne, who expressed his admiration for Joe’s dedication: “He’s so dedicated to it, and he’s inspired me so much to just try and help in any way I can.”

Despite the chilly weather on Saturday morning, the volunteers were undeterred. Macdonald remarked, “It’s great to see these guys out here, despite the weather conditions and despite it being their Saturday. But like so many other Canadians, they still think it’s important enough to come out here and commemorate these men.”

Milne added a poignant reminder of the harsh conditions faced by soldiers, noting that temperatures before the Battle of Vimy Ridge dropped as low as -25 degrees.

“If the soldiers can do it, why can’t we honor them?” he said.

In addition to the street displays, more posters are being exhibited at City Hall and the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Museum until November 12, further ensuring that the memory of these soldiers remains alive in the community.
