Multi-vehicle crash shuts down stretch of Winnipeg's south Perimeter Highway
'Skating rink-type roads' blamed in crashes involving up to 8 vehicles
Winnipeg's south Perimeter Highway is closed in all directions at St. Mary’s Road following a multi-vehicle crash, according to police.
Emergency crews are on-site, though there are no reports of serious injuries. Approximately six vehicles were involved in the incident, and one person was taken to the hospital as a precaution, a police spokesperson said.
The initial crash occurred shortly after 7 p.m., followed by several additional collisions caused by "skating rink-type roads," the spokesperson explained.
On Monday, rain combined with overnight sub-zero temperatures left much of the city coated in a slick layer of frost Tuesday morning.
Numerous tow trucks are responding to the scene, which is expected to lead to significant traffic delays, police added.
