‘New chapter’ for independent Montreal cinema after Denis Villeneuve donation
At a time when many independent movie theatres in Canada are struggling, one Montreal cinema says it is entering “a new chapter” after receiving a major donation from Quebec filmmaker Denis Villeneuve.
As many independent movie theatres in Canada face challenges, one Montreal cinema is beginning “a new chapter” thanks to a substantial donation from Quebec filmmaker Denis Villeneuve.
Cinéma du Parc announced this week that Villeneuve, the director known for “Dune” and other major films, has contributed an undisclosed amount to support the long-term financial stability of the theatre he has frequently visited.
The cinema, located in the basement of a shopping centre near McGill University, is unveiling its newly renovated space on Thursday. The makeover, costing over $1.4 million, includes a revamped mezzanine and a new interior featuring red drapes reminiscent of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks.” Even the bathroom stalls have been updated with portraits of movie characters.
Roxanne Sayegh, the theatre’s executive director, told The Canadian Press that while the cinema remains well-attended and financially stable, Villeneuve’s donation will provide much-needed “stability” in the future.
“(Villeneuve) recognized it was a significant investment for the cinema and supported our mission. This cinema has played a crucial role in his journey as a filmmaker,” Sayegh said. “He has been a patron of Cinéma du Parc for decades, and when I reached out, he agreed to support us.”
Villeneuve has previously supported the non-profit team running Cinéma du Parc. Last year, he donated to Cinéma Beaubien, another Montreal independent theatre managed by the same organization. Sayegh emphasized that such backing is vital as many cinemas are struggling.
A survey conducted by the Network of Independent Canadian Exhibitors in March revealed that 60 percent of independent film exhibitors operated at a loss in their most recent financial year, highlighting a “crisis” in the industry.
The Conseil des arts de Montréal, which helped coordinate Villeneuve’s donation, hopes it will inspire others to contribute. Julien Valmary, the council’s director of philanthropy and support, said, “We hope Denis Villeneuve’s donation will encourage other donors to step forward.”
Villeneuve is not alone in supporting independent cinemas. On Tuesday, Toronto’s Revue Cinema announced a new lease agreement to stay open after facing a potential 50 percent rent increase. Mexican director Guillermo del Toro had shared a petition on X to save the theatre earlier in July.
