New Jacques-Bizard bridge in Montreal's West Island is now ready for use
30,000 cars use bridge every day as it's only way to get on and off l'Île Bizard
The new Jacques-Bizard bridge, the sole access point to Île Bizard, is now open to traffic. Approximately 30,000 drivers use the bridge daily.
In 2022, Montreal's city government awarded a $67.8-million contract to EBC Inc. for the bridge's construction, expanding it to four traffic lanes from the previous three.
The new bridge features a two-way bike lane, wider sidewalks, and a belvedere at its center. The city highlighted that the bridge represents a significant investment aimed at improving mobility for local residents over the next century.
While the bridge is now open, additional work remains. The city plans to revitalize Denis-Benjamin-Viger park, located at one end of the bridge, with the work expected to be completed by next summer.
The east-side sidewalk of the bridge is open, but the west-side sidewalk will remain closed until next summer. In the meantime, pedestrians can use the west-side walkway of the old bridge, which is now fully closed to vehicular traffic.
