New round of Calgary water restrictions begins

Calgarians will once again face stricter water usage, including thirstier lawns, shorter showers, and fewer but fuller dishwasher loads, as repairs begin this week on a problematic water main.
The Bearspaw South Feeder Main in the city's northwest burst in early June, flooding a section of the Trans-Canada Highway and prompting the city to enforce strict water use restrictions for several weeks.
Just as these restrictions began to ease earlier this month, Mayor Jyoti Gondek announced that additional issues had been identified along the more than 10-kilometre pipeline, requiring further repairs before winter sets in.
Crews will excavate sections of the pipe and reinforce weak areas with concrete, with the work expected to take about a month.
During the repairs, the pipe will be shut down, and the city will reintroduce Stage 4 water restrictions, which prohibit outdoor use of potable water.
Residents are also being urged to reduce their indoor water consumption for activities such as showers, laundry, and dishwashing.
