Nova Scotia updates policing standards for the first time since 2003
Barbara Adams says the new standards are in response to recommendations made by the commission of inquiry that investigated the mass shooting in Nova Scotia that claimed the lives of 22 people in April 2020.
Nova Scotia's justice minister, Barbara Adams, has introduced 39 new standards for all police services in the province, including the RCMP.
Adams explained that these updated standards are in response to recommendations from the commission of inquiry into the April 2020 mass shooting that claimed 22 lives in Nova Scotia. This is the first time the standards have been updated since 2003, and they are aimed at improving the effectiveness of policing services across the province.
The standards cover five key areas: critical incident response, use of force, police investigations, service response, and records management.
In addition, Adams issued a ministerial directive requiring all police forces to comply with these standards. A public safety audit unit will also be established to ensure that police forces meet these requirements.
