"The investigation has determined that both motorcycles were traveling at extremely high speeds prior to the incident," the OPP stated in a release on Thursday. "It has also been confirmed that speed was a contributing factor in the collision."
An investigation by OPP detectives has confirmed that excessive speed was the primary cause of a motorcycle crash on August 2 that resulted in the deaths of two Ottawa men.
"The investigation has determined that both motorcycles were traveling at extremely high speeds prior to the incident," the OPP stated in a release on Thursday. "It has also been confirmed that speed was a contributing factor in the collision."
The crash occurred on Highway 416 near Highway 417 late on Friday evening, August 2.
One of the motorcyclists was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries shortly afterward in the hospital.
Although police did not initially identify the victims, the Gatineau Olympiques junior hockey team later revealed online that one of the victims was Creed Jones, a well-liked former goalie for the Olympiques.
The Gatineau team announced plans to honor Jones at an upcoming game on September 28 against the Rimouski Océanic, another team Jones had played for.
The investigation involved officers from the Ottawa detachment, as well as collision reconstructionists and technical collision investigators, according to the OPP.
