Ottawa man charged with impaired operation after collision near Carleton Place
He has since been released, with a court date scheduled for December 9 in Perth.
A man from Ottawa, Ryan McQuillan, 24, is facing charges following a single-vehicle collision near Carleton Place on Sunday, November 3.
The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on Scotch Corners Road in Beckwith Township, where OPP officers found that a car had left the roadway on a curve. Fortunately, no injuries were reported for the driver or passenger involved.
After conducting a roadside test, the OPP transported McQuillan to their detachment for further testing, leading to a charge of impaired operation.
He has since been released, with a court date scheduled for December 9 in Perth.
His driver's license has been suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
This incident comes amid a broader trend in impaired driving in Ontario, as highlighted by the OPP's 2023 Annual Report.
The report indicated a nine percent increase in impaired driving charges, totaling 11,142 instances, compared to the previous year.
While alcohol and drug-related fatalities decreased from 84 in 2022 to 67 in 2023, this figure remains significantly higher than the 42 fatalities recorded in 2021.
Impaired driving charges accounted for six percent of all roadway charges laid last year, emphasizing the ongoing concerns surrounding road safety in the province.
