Over 300K Samsung stoves in Canada recalled over fire hazard
Health Canada issued the recall on Thursday for several models of Samsung’s electric slide-in ranges because the front-mounted knobs can “accidently activate” through contact by people and pets and pose a fire hazard.
Thousands of electric stoves are being recalled in Canada due to a fire risk that has resulted in injuries.
On Thursday, Health Canada announced the recall of several models of Samsung's electric slide-in ranges, citing that the front-mounted knobs can be "accidentally activated" by contact from people or pets, posing a fire hazard.
Approximately 326,250 units of the affected ranges were sold across Canada between 2013 and August 2024.
Samsung Electronics Canada is offering customers free knob locks or covers, depending on their specific model, to prevent these accidental activations.
While waiting for the free knob kits, customers can continue using their recalled stoves but are advised to take safety precautions.
Health Canada recommends that customers using the recalled ranges without knob locks or covers ensure children and pets are kept away from the knobs, avoid leaving objects on the range when not in use, and always turn off the knobs after cooking before leaving home or going to sleep.
For those with Wi-Fi-enabled ranges, the agency suggests enabling the "Cooktop On" notification in the Samsung SmartThings app to receive alerts if a cooktop burner is activated.
As of Wednesday, Samsung has received 57 reports of incidents and seven reports of injuries related to the affected stoves.
Customers who own the recalled stoves can visit Samsung Canada's website to request a free knob kit.
