Poilievre pledges to remove GST from purchase of new homes sold for under $1M
Pledge expands Conservative promise to remove GST new homes with rental prices below market value
Poilievre Promises to Scrap GST on New Homes Under $1 Million if Elected
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has vowed to eliminate the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on new homes priced below $1 million if his party wins the next federal election.
In a campaign-style video released online Monday morning, Poilievre made the announcement ahead of a media event scheduled for 10:00 a.m. ET in Ottawa, where he is expected to share further details.
According to the Conservatives, this policy could save homebuyers $40,000 on an $800,000 property and encourage the construction of 30,000 additional homes annually across Canada.
This pledge builds on Poilievre’s earlier commitment to remove the GST from new housing developments with below-market rental rates.
The announcement follows a similar move from the Liberal government, which in September last year removed the GST on new rental housing projects. The Liberals said the policy would provide a $25,000 tax break for buyers of rental units priced at $500,000.
