Postwar flick The Brutalist and musical Emilia Pérez win big at Golden Globes

The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez Shine at the Golden Globe Awards

At Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez were among the major winners. The Brutalist claimed the award for Best Drama Film, with Brady Corbet winning Best Director and Adrien Brody taking home Best Actor.

During his acceptance speech, Corbet commented, “No one was asking for a three-and-half-hour film about a mid-century designer in 70mm. But it works.”

Emilia Pérez, a musical about a Mexican drug lord who transitions through gender-affirming surgery, led the nominations with ten and took home several prestigious awards, including Best Film, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, Best Song for “El Mal,” and Best Non-English Language Film. Director Jacques Audiard expressed his hope that the film would serve as "a beacon of light in dark times."

In a night filled with stars, including Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Denzel Washington, and Ariana Grande, comedian Nikki Glaser made history as the first solo female host of the Golden Globes.

The 82nd annual event, still recovering from past controversies regarding diversity and ethics, saw Shōgun win Best Television Drama, with Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Tadanobu Asano earning acting awards for their roles. "I'm very happy!" Asano exclaimed after his win.

Jean Smart won Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks, and the show also claimed Best Comedy Series. Demi Moore received a surprise win for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her performance in The Substance, marking her first-ever Golden Globe.

Best Supporting Actor in a Musical or Comedy went to Sebastian Stan for A Different Man, where he portrayed a character who undergoes a physical transformation.

Among Canadian nominees, Pamela Anderson, Gabriel LaBelle, Martin Short, and director Denis Villeneuve were all shut out of the awards.
