PWHL unveils names, logos for all six teams ahead of second season
“We wanted to move mountains and do whatever it took to give them that and names and logos that felt like they were evocative of their communities,” Bhatt Shah said in a statement.
The long-awaited reveal of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) team names took place on Monday, marking an exciting moment for fans.
The Canadian teams will be known as the Montreal Victoire, Ottawa Charge, and Toronto Sceptres. In the U.S., the teams are the Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, and New York Sirens.
Kanan Bhatt Shah, PWHL’s vice president of brand and marketing, who spearheaded the naming process, said fans expressed a strong preference for "traditional" team names and logos. “We heard loud and clear from the start that fans wanted classic nicknames and logos,” Bhatt Shah explained in a statement. "We were committed to delivering names and logos that resonate with their communities."
In the league’s inaugural season, from January to May, teams played without official nicknames or logos, with jerseys displaying only their city names. Full team jerseys will be revealed in late October or early November.
The league also confirmed that all teams will retain their primary colors from the first season for continuity, while adding new colors to each team’s palette.
Montreal Victoire's logo features "Victoire" above a winged figure, symbolizing the Goddess of Victory, with a hidden "M" and a fleur-de-lis at its center. Team captain Marie-Philip Poulin said the identity is something the team and fans can unite around. "It’s going to be a mindset," Poulin noted at Monday’s press conference.
Amy Scheer, PWHL’s senior vice president of business operations, said choosing a French name for the Montreal team was intentional to reflect the culture of Montreal and Quebec. "There is no English translation," Scheer emphasized.
The Toronto Sceptres' name celebrates the city’s "regal history and commanding presence," referring to its Queen City nickname and Queen Street. The sceptre motif on the jersey is meant to symbolize power. Toronto captain Blayre Turnbull praised the choice, calling it a meaningful connection to the city.
The Ottawa Charge name pays tribute to the city's motto, “Advance – Ottawa – En Avant.” The team’s emblem is a red “O” with spiked edges symbolizing momentum, and the slight gap in the letter allows it to be read as both an "O" and a "C."
This announcement comes ahead of the PWHL’s second season. While the schedule has not yet been released, the season will start earlier than last year's January 1 kickoff, and the regular season will expand from 24 games to 30.
“Season two is going to bring a lot of excitement,” Scheer added.
