The College of Physicians of Quebec (CMQ) has called for an immediate suspension of private sector expansion in healthcare, raising concerns over the impact on universal and accessible healthcare.

This request emerged as part of six guiding principles set forth during the CMQ’s board meeting on October 25, aimed at reassessing the role of private healthcare in Quebec to safeguard the sustainability of the public system.

The CMQ noted that the rapid growth of privately funded health services, covering both state-required and non-required care, has not shown evidence of improving healthcare access or lowering system costs.

Instead, they argue, it compromises the accessibility guaranteed by laws and regulations.

“The CMQ’s mission is to protect the public by ensuring quality medicine,” the organization stated, emphasizing that these principles are intended to ensure that access to care remains both universal and equitable for all Quebecers.
