‘Russians at War’ documentary at TIFF sparks backlash over Canadian funding
Ukrainian diplomats and advocates in Canada are calling on the Toronto International Film Festival to cancel screenings of a documentary depicting Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine that they say amounts to “Russian propaganda.”
Ukrainian diplomats and advocates in Canada are urging the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to cancel the screenings of Russians At War, a documentary that portrays Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine. The film, directed by Anastasia Trofimova, was produced with Canadian support, including government funding. Ukrainian critics, such as Consul General Oleh Nikolenko, argue the film serves as "Russian propaganda," by failing to address Russian war crimes or civilian casualties. Despite the backlash, TIFF has proceeded with the film’s North American premiere, prompting planned protests in Toronto.
Trofimova maintains her documentary is anti-war and highlights Russian soldiers’ growing disillusionment with the invasion, adding that she operated without the Russian government’s knowledge. Nonetheless, Ukrainian advocates believe the film downplays the aggressors' responsibility and manipulates the narrative, sparking controversy over its message.
