Santa Claus cleared for travel in Canadian airspace

Santa’s sleigh has received clearance to travel through Canadian airspace, as confirmed by the federal government on Monday, just in time for the holiday season.

Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, Anita Anand, announced the approval in a press release, stating that she had consulted with her team of elves and reviewed essential documents, including Santa’s flight plan. This marks her first meeting with Santa since taking on her role as transport minister.

“Transport Canada is committed to ensuring safe and smooth travel across the country during this festive season. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday,” Anand said.

Children eager to follow Santa’s journey on Christmas Eve can do so through the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) website. The platform offers a holiday countdown, games, music, and other festive activities. This year marks the 69th anniversary of NORAD’s Santa-tracking tradition.

Each year, more than 100,000 children call NORAD’s hotline to check on Santa’s location, while millions more track him online in various languages, including English and Japanese.

This tradition began during the Cold War when a child mistakenly called the Continental Air Defense Command—now NORAD—and shared their Christmas wish list, giving rise to this cherished annual custom.

For those curious, Santa’s location can also be checked by calling 1-877-HI-NORAD. Live operators will be available from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. ET to provide updates.
